Back to School Challenges

It’s that time of year again, the summer holidays are over and the kids are back at school. When you have a child with reduced hand function, back to school season is more complicated than a new uniform.

Kids don’t come with an easy-read guide of everything they’ll need for their new classes. You can do everything you could possibly think of, and by the second week of term you’ll spot another few things they need some support with! If your child is facing some new challenges this new school year, we have some tools to help.

Drawing, Writing, Mark Making, Painting…

Whatever stage your child is at at school, there’s likely to be a time each day where they want to grip a pencil, pen or brush. If your child has trouble with this, we have some tools which could help.

For support with other crafting activities, we also have various scissor options available!

Accessing Technology

Technology is part of daily life for children anyway, but for children with reduced hand function it might be an important tool for accessing the curriculum.

Use our Flexi Phone Holder to securely clamp a phone or tablet to your child’s wheelchair. Easy to position where it is most comfortable for them, so they don’t have to compromise their posture. When they’re back home, it can also be used with our Gaming Controller Holder to play their favourite Xbox or PlayStation games while they unwind!

Does your child have trouble isolating their fingers? The Sixth Digit is a wearable stylus that allows them to comfortably type or press buttons.

Lunchtime

Eating lunch with their friends should be a lovely part of your child’s day. If your child has trouble with conventional cutlery, one of our eating solutions could help!

You can also support your child to keep hydrated with one of our drinking solutions.

Getting Ready

The first week of back to school mornings is always challenging, but that doesn’t mean you can’t start looking for tools to make them easier.

We know school mornings are a rush. Some simple tools could support your child to be more independent in getting themselves ready. Boost their independence and confidence, and save yourself some precious time – maybe even have two minutes for a coffee!

Dressing aids can support your child to do up zips and buttons, and even tie laces independently! Check out the Button Puller for school shirts, Zip Grips and MagZips for those warm coats, and Zubits magnetic shoe laces for a smart and easy solution.

Not sure where to start?

If you’re not sure what might be suitable for your child, the best place to start is always by having a browse on our website. Flick through the pictures to find helpful videos demonstrating the products, and talk to your child about what might work for them.

If you still don’t know which tools might help them, but you know they need some support with their grip at school, our EazyHold Straps and General Purpose Mini aid are a great place to start.

With the right tools, school can be an amazing learning experience. We hope our solutions can help to overcome challenges caused by limited hand function.

Enjoy the year!
