100km / 30 hours / 7 by foot / 1 by wheelchair – The Oxfam Trail Walker

Have you ever heard of the Oxfam Trail Walker?  Yes, No…? Well, I have to admit we hadn’t, so when we were contacted to find out if the Mountain Trike would be suitable for someone who currently needs to use a wheelchair to aid them with their mobility, we needed to look into the feasibility. Let me set the scene – the Oxfam Trail Walker is an endurance challenge to get a team of four 100KM across the South Down Way in under 30 hours!  It’s the ultimate physical and mental challenge.  A support crew is a vital part of the team who’ll meet the team at checkpoints along the route and provide supplies and encouragement – they’ll carry kit and give motivation and morale to help complete the challenge. I have to say, when finding out more about this event my initial thoughts were – wow, 100km in…

Aaron Phipps makes it to the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro with all terrain Mountain Trike wheelchair

Aaron Phipps completed the challenges he set himself for 2016 – see UK Paralympian’s greatest challenge to find out what those were. His ultimate challenge was to try and make it to the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro – the world’s highest free standing mountain at 5,895m with the help of his all terrain wheelchair – a Mountain Trike. On 21st May 2016 he achieved this – making him one of the few wheelchair users to do this – and (he thinks) the first unassisted disability climb ever.  Aaron Phipps makes it to the summit of Mt Kili It was no easy accomplishment. Speaking after the challenge, Aaron says, “We did it. The chair held up. Unfortunately as we got higher up the mountain I was able to use it less and less.  The head guide was concerned as 4/5 hour normal hike was taking 9+ hours and said I was going to have to…

Hire a Mountain Trike wheelchair – perfect for a field trip

Generally, we find that our all-terrain wheelchair products are secondary chairs and can be an expensive purchase for a lot of people. To help people experience the great outdoors with our products we took the decision to create a fleet of Mountain Trikes that could be hired out – this is a great option for a couple of reasons  - people hire for specific activities – festivals, weekend trips away, school trips and we’ve even had them hired for weddings!  The other option is people hire them to try out at their leisure in their own environment before making the decision to then go onto purchase. We were contacted by Sophie, who is currently studying a degree in civil engineering at Loughborough University. She’d been looking for a suitable off-road wheelchair to enable her to join her fellow students on a 3-day field course to the Peak District. Sophie struggles…
