Mountain Trike wheelchair drivetrain maintenance

How to maintain the drivetrain on the Mountain Trike lever drive wheelchair

Good maintenance on your Mountain Trike is important and as there are many components on the Mountain Trike it is important to regularly check parts for wear and tear.

The Mountain Trike product range that has the lever drive system (MT, eTrike, Evo) have certain components to check and the drive clutch is one of those, sometimes it may start to slip due to excess wear and tear or dirt can build up in the clutch.

If this is the case the you may experience little or no resistance when pushing the drive levers forwards, as if the drive has slipped.

Here are a couple of maintenance tips and options to consider if you need replacement parts.

1. Try spraying spray lube in the drive clutch – this may clean out any dirt or grit and improve the engagement – see photo instructions below. Spray lubricant into the clutch bearing and spin the outer ring to work out any dirt. Then wipe off the excess and see if the drive still slips.

2. If cleaning doesn’t help then it is likely that the Clutch would need replacing. Get in touch and we can provide you a price for this and send it to you (cost tbc/under £100).  This is a slightly more complex fitting option as the drive unit would need taking apart and ideally a bearing press used to push out the old clutch and press in the new one. It is possible with hand tools, but a bit more difficult.

See instructions ‘Drive clutch separation

The other option is we can supply a whole Drive unit (left or right hand depending on your setup). This will include a new clutch, drive carrier, engagement ring etc (cost tbc under £200) this is simple to swap on/off the Mountain Trike.
